Emergency Procedures
- Stop play — whistle, clear the area around the injured player
- Charge Person assesses — is the player conscious? breathing? responsive?
- If serious → Call Person dials 911 using the script above
- Do NOT move if head, neck, or spinal injury is suspected
- Begin CPR / use AED if no breathing or pulse
- Control Person opens gates, directs ambulance to exact location
- Stay with the player until EMS arrives and takes over
- Notify parents/guardians — call the emergency contact on the roster
- Complete an incident report after the situation is resolved
Concussion Protocol (Alberta law — Support Team Concussion Act, 2021)
Red flags → Call 911 immediately:
- Neck pain or tenderness
- Seizure or convulsion
- Loss of consciousness
- Repeated vomiting
- Increasing confusion or agitation
- Weakness or tingling in arms/legs
- Deteriorating condition
If ANY concussion sign or symptom is present:
- Remove from play immediately — do not allow return that day
- Do not leave the player alone
- Inform parents/guardians
- Medical clearance required before return to play (Alberta law)
- Follow the graduated return-to-sport protocol (minimum 7 days)

Severe Weather — Lightning Protocol

30-30 Rule:
- If the time between seeing lightning and hearing thunder is less than 30 seconds, clear the field immediately
- Move all players and spectators to the lightning shelter
- Wait 30 minutes after the last flash of lightning or rumble of thunder before resuming play
- Do NOT shelter under isolated trees, dugouts, or open structures
Heat & Hydration
- Mandatory water breaks every 20-30 minutes in warm weather
- Watch for signs of heat illness: dizziness, nausea, headache, confusion, cessation of sweating
- Move affected player to shade, cool with water, call 911 if confusion or loss of consciousness
- Consider cancelling or modifying sessions when Environment Canada issues heat warnings
Player Medical Information
Coach: review your roster for allergies, asthma, diabetes, seizure disorders, and epi-pen carriers before every session. Keep this information accessible but private (first names only for minors).
